BATMAN ARKHAM ASYLUM (2009): Behind The Mask of Batman

Batman: Arkham Asylum is an action-adventure video game developed by Rocksteady Studios and published by Eidos Interactive and Warner Bros Interactive Entertainment. It is the second release of the Arkham series. Released in 2009 for PlayStation, Xbox, and Microsoft Windows, the game quickly became a landmark title in the superhero gaming genre.


Synopsis

In the wake of the Arkham Origins events, Batman thwarts the Joker's plot to demolish Gotham using bombs and apprehends him, escorting him back to Arkham Asylum. It's within the asylum's confines that Batman uncovers the Joker's calculated scheme – deliberately getting captured to access a potent drug known as Titan. This enhanced poison, which previously augmented Bane without the need for his traditional tanks, has an unintended consequence – transforming its host into a monstrous entity. Now tasked not only with thwarting the Joker but also contending with the array of lunatics within the asylum, Batman faces off against a rogues' gallery that includes the likes of The Scarecrow, Harley Quinn, Poison Ivy, Killer Croc, and Victor Zsasz.

The gadgets are introduced gradually, allowing players to master each tool. This approach gives a more grounded feel to Batman's abilities, making it a different experience from the more expansive gadgetry in later games.

Arkham Asylum is a psychological thriller at its core. The narrative is tightly woven, with Batman trying to regain control of the asylum after the Joker takes over. The focus is on the psychological battles between Batman and his iconic foes. It's not just about physical confrontations; it's about unraveling the mysteries and facing the demons of the mind. This narrative depth sets Arkham Asylum apart, emphasizing the cerebral aspects of Batman's world.


Character Designs and Voice Acting

The game also features a rich and engaging story, written by veteran Batman writer Paul Dini, and voiced by iconic actors such as Kevin Conroy as Batman and Mark Hamill as the Joker. The game also incorporates elements from various Batman comics, such as the graphic novel Arkham Asylum: A Serious House on Serious Earth, which inspired the game’s dark and surreal tone, and the storyline Knightfall, which introduced the villain Bane and his venom drug.


The game has some differences from the original comics, such as the design and personality of some characters, the origin and motivation of some events, and the inclusion and exclusion of some elements. For example, the game portrays Harley Quinn as a more seductive and violent character, who wears a nurse outfit instead of her traditional jester costume. The game also changes the reason why the Joker takes over Arkham Asylum, from wanting to create a twisted carnival to wanting to create an army of super-soldiers using the Titan formula, a modified version of Bane’s venom. The game also omits some characters from the comics, such as Robin, Batgirl, and Catwoman, who are only mentioned or seen in easter eggs.
